How do I manage a GS1 prefix that is already in use, including editing, archiving, retired codes, and exporting its UPCs?
A saved GS1 prefix’s digits cannot be edited, even before codes have been issued. If the digits were entered incorrectly, archive and remove the block, then register the correct prefix. The block size, “GTINs purchased,” locks once any UPC from the block is on a product. You can still change the Name and the packaging indicators. If a block was saved at the wrong size after codes were issued, contact Endless support to correct it.
Archiving and removing are two steps:
- Archive stops Endless drawing new UPCs from the block. Codes already on products keep working and stay reserved to your company. To archive a prefix that an integration uses, assign the integration a different prefix first. The error names the integration. An archived prefix stays in the list and can be restored.
- Remove is available only on an archived prefix. Products keep their UPCs, but Endless stops tracking the codes as yours, so another block can claim them.
Retired codes are codes from the block that were on a product once and are no longer assigned, for example because the product’s UPC was changed. Endless keeps them out of the pool. Select the retired count under “UPCs available” to see them. “Return to block” puts a code back in the pool, and Endless can then assign it to another product. Only return a code that never reached a trading partner, because GS1 does not allow reissuing one that did. Endless refuses if a product still uses the code.
To list every UPC in a block, select the download button in the prefix’s row. Endless sends a CSV to your Inbox with one row per code: its status (Available, In Use, or Retired), the linked product’s ID, SKU, and name, and the inner pack, master carton, and pallet GTINs.
