How do routing strategies split orders across buildings and handle orders that can’t be fully sourced?

“Max fulfillments per order” limits how many buildings routing can split one order across. Setting it to 1 keeps the in-stock units on one building. A backorder fulfillment order does not count toward the limit, so the order can still get one shipping fulfillment order plus one backorder.

With a limit above 1, Endless splits an order across buildings when no single building has everything. It can also split one line’s quantity, for example 6 units from one building and 4 from another.

When no allowed set of buildings covers every unit, the Shortfall strategy decides what happens:

  • Ship what’s available, backorder the rest, the default: fulfillment orders for the units in stock, plus one Draft fulfillment order for the rest that waits for stock.
  • Ship what’s available: fulfillment orders only for units in stock. The rest stay in Items To Fulfill. If nothing is in stock, routing fails.
  • Wait until the whole order can ship: nothing is created, and Endless reports “Not enough available stock for SKU (2 of 5).”
  • Create fulfillment orders anyway: every remaining unit goes on one Draft fulfillment order at one building, even with no stock. It cannot be allocated until every unit is in stock.

The Destinations setting applies to wholesale orders that list several ship-to stores, and it may not be available on every account. “Single destination” routes the order as a whole. “One fulfillment per distribution center” and “One fulfillment per store” route each destination separately, with its own address, and the limit becomes “Max fulfillments per destination.”

When destinations are split, Endless creates fulfillment orders only if every destination can be fully planned. If one would be left with unplanned units, it creates nothing and reports “No fulfillments were created because a destination could not be routed,” with the reason. That is why only the two options that place every unit can be chosen with destination splitting.
