What is a sales channel, how do orders from an integration get assigned to one, and what do its settings do?

A sales channel groups orders by where they were sold, for reporting, pricing, approval, and accounting. An integration is a connection to another system, and several integrations can send orders to the same sales channel.

How an order gets its sales channel:

  • Shopify: every order goes to the integration’s Sales Channel setting. To split one store’s orders, create an automation with the Order Created trigger, an Order Tags condition, and the Assign Sales Channel action.
  • Wayfair and Mirakl: the channel mapped to the order’s external channel on the Data mapping tab, or the integration’s default sales channel when there is no mapping.
  • Other integrations use the sales channel in their settings. An order created without one goes to the company’s Default Channel.

For warehouses such as ShipBob, ShipStation, InfoPlus, Jazz OMS, and Business Central, sales channel mappings choose the store or channel in that system that receives each order.

The sales channel’s settings:

  • Auto-approve Orders: on by default, it approves orders that arrive Pending from an integration. When off, they wait for a person or an automation.
  • Default Channel: makes this the company’s fallback channel. Only one channel has it.
  • Channel Type: sets the default image requirements. Some warehouses, such as GoBolt, Extensiv, MasonHub, ShipBob, ShipHero, and Jazz OMS, use it to send Wholesale orders as business orders. Origin is a label only.
  • Handle: identifies the channel in imports of customers, demand, and historical shipments. Files using the old handle stop matching after a change.
  • Needs images: a listing on the channel’s Listings tab does not yet fill every image slot in the channel’s Image Requirements with a JPEG or PNG of the minimum size.

You can archive an unused sales channel and restore it later. It cannot be archived while it is the default or an active integration sends orders to it. Archived channels are hidden from new-order choices, but existing orders and reports keep their channel.

You can connect several Shopify stores, including test or expansion stores. Each store is its own Shopify integration with its own credentials and Sales Channel, and your plan can limit how many sales integrations you connect.
