How and when does Endless send a ship notice to a retailer, and what do I need to fill in?
Endless sends an 856 automatically when a fulfillment order on an Endless EDI order becomes Fulfilled, only when “Send 856 automatically on shipment?” is enabled on the integration. It is off unless explicitly enabled. Each fulfillment order gets its own 856, covering only its shipments and cartons. An 856 that would be identical to one already sent is not sent again.
The 856 is built from what is recorded in Endless:
- the shipment: Date shipped, Tracking number, Carrier service, Bill of lading, Reference number, Total weight, and package counts, from Create shipment or from your warehouse;
- the fulfillment order’s containers and their SSCCs;
- the order’s B2B Info, such as Number of Cartons, Number of Pallets, Reported Order Weight, and Store ID, which a fulfillment order’s B2B Info card can override.
Enter the retailer’s routing details on the shipment: the carrier as Carrier service, the BOL in Bill of lading, and a load or appointment number in Reference number. Do this before the fulfillment order becomes Fulfilled, because an enabled automatic 856 is sent at that moment. When containers are used on an EDI order, an In Progress fulfillment order cannot ship until it has containers with SSCCs.
Which fields are required, and how a blank one is handled, depend on the retailer’s format, so check the retailer’s routing guide. For parcel shipments, many retailers accept the tracking number in place of a BOL; confirm with the retailer.
Leave automatic sending off if you want to review documents before sending. To review or edit a document, use Send ASN (EDI 856) or Send Invoice (EDI 810) in the actions menu of a Fulfilled fulfillment order. Each opens the document Endless would send, as editable data, and Send to EDI Partner sends it. These manual sends go out even when an identical document was already sent, so use them to correct or resend a document. The 810 has its own “Send 810 automatically on shipment?” setting, so you can choose automatic sending separately for notices and invoices.
