How do I assign and manage UPCs in Endless, and why does Endless reject a UPC or GTIN?
“Assign UPC” gives a product the next unused code from your company’s GS1 prefixes. It is on the product’s actions menu. You see it only when GS1 prefixes are available on your account, at least one prefix registered under GS1 Prefixes in company settings still has unassigned codes, and the product is not archived. If the product already has a UPC, the assigned code replaces it.
Cloning a product copies its UPC, so a clone starts with the same UPC as the original. Use “Assign UPC” or edit the UPC on the clone to give it its own code.
“There are no remaining UPCs available to assign” means every code in your GS1 prefixes is assigned or retired. Register another prefix in company settings, or enter a UPC by hand.
When you remove or replace a UPC that came from one of your prefixes, Endless asks “Can this UPC be used again?” Choose “Return to block” only if the code never reached a trading partner on a label, catalog, or order. Endless can then assign it to another product. Choose “Keep it retired” if it did, and Endless never assigns it again.
You can create a product without a UPC and add one later.
“The GTIN check digit does not match” appears when Endless prints an ITF-14 label. The last digit of a GTIN is calculated from the others, and this one does not match, which usually means a typo. Endless skips that label. Correct the GTIN on the product’s Dimensions tab, or use “Validate GTINs” there.
“The GTIN cannot be encoded as an ITF-14” means the value cannot be turned into a 14-digit GTIN, for example because it has more than 14 digits. Enter an 8, 12, 13, or 14 digit GTIN.
Endless lets two products share a UPC. Give each product its own UPC, so that order lines matched by UPC find a single product. Contact Endless support for help with order lines that did not match a product.
