How do I set up custom attributes, and what do their types and options do?

Create custom attributes on the Attributes page. Select “Add Attribute,” choose what it applies to, and enter a name and type. Fill in values on each product’s Attributes tab, in the product sheet, or with the product import.

The types are:

  • Text: short values such as color, material, season, or fit.
  • Description: long-form copy, bullets, and rich text.
  • Number: numbers, currencies, and percentages.
  • Yes / No: a toggle, such as “BPA Free.”
  • Date: dates such as launch or discontinuation.

“Applies to” chooses Products or Media. Media attributes appear as Fields on images in the media library and cannot use the Description type. Customer attributes are set up separately for customer records.

Group collects related attributes under one heading on the product’s Attributes tab. Help Text is shown to your team when they edit the value.

The handle is the attribute’s short code, suggested from the name. It starts with a letter, uses lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, and has up to 50 characters. The product import and export use it in the column name custom.handle, so changing it changes that column.

The options are:

  • Pin this attribute to make it easier to find: lists it first on products, in filters, and in the product sheet.
  • Use as a filter for products: adds it to the product list filters.
  • Add to the product sheet: adds it as a column in the product sheet.

To check that a Text attribute uses your list of values and is filled in on every product, add it to the product sheet and review its column. Contact Endless support to discuss allowed value lists and required attributes.

Attributes belong to the company and are shared by all its brands.

The warning that a name “is very close to the system property” means it resembles a built-in field, such as UPC or MSRP. You can continue, but use the built-in field when it holds the same information.
