Which product details can a product import set, and how does it treat blank cells, tags, and images?

A product import can set most catalog details: name, description, UPC, part number, product type, brand, UOM, dimensions, MSRP, MAP, default costs, customs, shipping, packaging, tags, images, and custom attributes.

  • Custom attributes: add a column named custom. followed by the attribute’s handle, such as custom.material. The product export uses the same headings. A handle that does not exist fails the row. You can also edit attributes in the Attributes view of the product sheet.
  • Prices: the import sets MSRP and MAP. For wholesale and other customer price tiers, use the Prices import on the customer list.
  • Costs: Default Unit Cost, Default Landed Cost, and Default Dropship Unit Cost can be updated for many products at once.
  • Inventory: set quantities with the inventory import on the Inventory page.
  • Images: a filled Image cell replaces all of the product’s images with the URLs in the cell, separated by commas.
  • Tags: tags in the Tags cell are added to the product’s existing tags. Remove tags on the product.

On existing products, a blank cell keeps the stored value in almost every column. To clear a value such as a description or UPC, clear it on the product. The three default cost columns are the exception. When a cost column is in the file, a blank cell clears that cost. Leave the column out of the file to keep stored costs.

A product export can be imported back without renaming columns, because the cost columns already use the import’s headings. The export lists only each product’s first image, so delete the Image column before you import it back. Gross Margin is calculated, so the import does not set it.
